Anthony Sweeney, 24, Sentenced for Stabbing Incident Outside Motherwell Asda Store

Motherwell, Scotland – Anthony Sweeney, a 24-year-old resident, has been sentenced to twenty months in prison following a stabbing incident that occurred outside the Asda store on Watson Street in Motherwell.

The incident took place on April 14, 2024, when Sweeney, who was out on bail for another case, approached an unknown man and engaged in a brief conversation before stabbing him.

The victim sustained severe injuries and required stitches to treat a wound on his back.

Witnesses present at the scene reported that the stabbing happened near the ‘click and collect’ area of the store around 7:15 p.m.

Staff members responded promptly to assist the victim, while Sweeney fled the scene.

Surveillance footage later captured him discarding the weapon, a lockback knife, in a nearby trash can.

During his arrest, Sweeney claimed he “couldn’t remember” the incident.

The Hamilton Sheriff Court, presided over by prosecutor Chloe O’Hara, revealed that Sweeney had initially been sentenced to thirty months.

However, due to his guilty plea and time spent in detention since April, the sentence was reduced to twenty months.

Sweeney, originally from Possilpark, was living with relatives in Motherwell at the time.

This case has highlighted the impact of such violent acts on the community and the swift action taken by authorities to bring the perpetrator to justice.
