Billy Wayne Herring, Beloved Mullins Resident and Former Firefighter, Passes Away at 74 After a Long Illness

Mullins, South Carolina – Mr. Billy Wayne Herring, a lifelong resident of Mullins and a dedicated firefighter, passed away peacefully on September 30, 2024, at the age of 74, following a prolonged period of declining health under the care of Crescent Hospice.

Mr. Herring, born on April 20, 1950, was well-known in the community for his commitment to public service and his love for his family.

He joined the Mullins Fire Department at just eighteen years old and served the town for many years until health issues led to his retirement.

Billy was a devoted husband to his wife, Lou Ray Herring, and took great joy in spending time with his grandchildren, whom he cherished.

In addition to his work as a firefighter, Mr. Herring had a passion for carpentry, working alongside his father-in-law, Mr. James Ray, throughout his life.

Billy also enjoyed fishing, watching NASCAR on Sundays, and keeping up with FOX News.

His involvement in the Mullins-Marion Freewill Baptist Church and his charitable contributions left a lasting mark on his hometown.

He is survived by his wife, Lou, and his two daughters, Erica Cook and Paige Herring, as well as his grandchildren, siblings, and many other beloved family members and friends.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 4, at Red Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery, led by Reverend Thad Jacobs and Reverend Teddy Rabon.

Visitation will take place from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., followed by the service at 4:00 p.m.

Mr. Herring’s passing has left a void in the community, but his legacy of service and love for his family will continue to inspire those who knew him.
