Cambodian-American Community Mourns the Loss of Sophath Sok, Beloved Ohio Resident

Elyria, Ohio – The Cambodian-American community in Elyria is grieving the loss of a respected and beloved member, Sophath Sok, who tragically passed away on the night of Monday, September 16, 2024, after a courageous battle with kidney cancer and liver failure. She was surrounded by her loving family in her final moments.

Sophath, known fondly as Sophie, was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and active community member. Originally from Cambodia, she migrated to the United States with the dream of building a new life and raising a family. She is survived by her two sons, Steven and Chris, her daughter-in-law Phalla, and her three cherished grandchildren: Janisa, Gianna, and Honest.

Sophie was a vibrant presence in the Cambodian community and played an active role in the Buddhist Temple in Elyria, where she volunteered every weekend. Her involvement in temple programs and events made her a well-known and respected figure. Sophie’s commitment to her family and her community, as well as her generosity, left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her.

Her passing comes just two months after the loss of her husband, Pradith Sok. The Sok family has been enduring the immense pain of losing both parents in such a short span of time. To help with the costs of memorial services and the relocation of their parents’ remains to Maryland, the Sok family has set up a GoFundMe campaign.

The fundraiser, organized by her son Chris Sok, aims to raise $10,000 to assist the family with funeral expenses, including cremation, and to help them take the necessary time to grieve. As of yesterday, the campaign has raised $205, with four donations, including contributions from Daniel Dang, Kyle Horner, Hurry Chuk, and Melissa Zoellner.

Kos Nevets shared his condolences on Facebook, writing, "Thank you!" in response to friends offering their support. E-Monee Dior commented, "Sorry for ur loss unc prayers to u and the family," while Mike Ellivlem added, "My condolence to you and your family."

Sophath Sok’s family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. They invite anyone touched by Sophie’s kindness to honor her memory by contributing to the memorial fund.
