Takoma Park, MD – Hagos (Happy) Alemayehu, a cherished figure in both the Takoma Park and Ethiopian communities, passed away on September 18, 2024, at the age of 77 after a brief battle with cancer.

Hagos was not only a father but also a respected member of the community, leaving behind a legacy filled with accomplishments, many of which were not widely known.

One notable achievement was his representation of Ethiopia in boxing at the 1972 Olympics, a source of pride for both his family and community.

Born and raised in Ethiopia, Hagos wished to return to his homeland for his final resting place.

One of his last dying wishes was to be buried in the cemetery on the grounds of his childhood church in Ethiopia, a request his family is working to fulfill.

A fundraiser, organized by Antonio DeVaul, has been set up to help transport his body back to Ethiopia to honor his final wish.

His son Victor, along with his family in Ethiopia, is seeking support from the community to carry out this heartfelt mission.

Hagos will be remembered for his deep connection to his roots, his dedication to his family, and his contribution to the community both in the U.S. and Ethiopia.
