Mason Scott Sells, Beloved Fayetteville Resident and Mercer University Student, Passes Away Unexpectedly While Playing Soccer

Fayetteville, Georgia – Mason Scott Sells, a 20-year-old resident of Fayetteville and a dedicated student at Mercer University, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, September 23, 2024.

He was playing soccer with friends at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, when a ball struck him in the chest, causing his heart to stop.

Mason’s sudden passing has left his family, friends, and the community heartbroken.

Born on September 29, 2003, at Henry Medical Center, Mason was a vibrant young man who brought joy to everyone around him.

He was known for his sharp mind, love for adventure, and a strong sense of loyalty and friendship.

Mason was a junior accounting major and a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity at Mercer University, where he was admired for his dedication to both academics and athletics.

He played soccer and was also a member of the shotgun team at Trinity Christian School in Sharpsburg, Georgia, where he graduated with honors.

Mason is lovingly remembered by his parents, Scott and Rachael Sells; his sister, Abigail; and his grandparents, Gail Slaton, Linda Sells, Jim Sells, and Lisa Sells.

The Celebration of Life Service for Mason will be held on Saturday, September 28, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Christian School.

Family and friends have been invited to attend in person or via live stream.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Sheila Lynn Storey expressed, “It is unimaginable the depth of sorrow and hurt that you guys are feeling for the loss of your child.”

Another friend, Carol Lambertsen Winkles, shared, “My heart breaks for all of you.

You are all in our prayers!”

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Blue Skies Ministries, an organization supporting families dealing with childhood cancer, in Mason’s honor.

Mason’s legacy of kindness, courage, and enthusiasm for life will continue to inspire all who knew him.
