Philanthropist and Business Leader Buz Koelbel of Denver Passes Away at 72 After Battle with Blood Cancer

Denver, Colorado – Buz Koelbel, a prominent figure in the Denver community and former CEO of Koelbel and Co., has tragically passed away at the age of 72. He died on September 24, 2024, after a courageous battle with blood cancer.

Koelbel, who led his father’s real estate firm for nearly four decades, transitioned to chairman earlier this year, handing the CEO position to his son, Carl Koelbel. Known for his philanthropic efforts, he contributed significantly to numerous local institutions, including the University of Colorado, the Denver Zoo, and the Museum of Nature and Science.

Many have taken to social media to honor his legacy. Kevin T Fitzgerald expressed, “Buz Koelbel did it with grace and style… he was charitable professionally, personally, philanthropically, and tirelessly.” Others, like Gary Corbett, remarked, “What a shock! Buz was everything Kevin described. What a guy! Very sad news.”

Koelbel’s impact extended beyond business; he was a co-founder of the High Line Canal Conservancy and served on multiple boards, demonstrating his commitment to community development. A memorial ceremony is set for October 1 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cherry Hills Village, with a reception to follow at Cherry Hills Country Club. The family requests donations to Junior Achievement or the High Line Canal Conservancy in lieu of flowers.
