Sanaa Vil, Sherwood High School Senior and Basketball Player, Tragically Passes Away in Montgomery County Car Accident

Montgomery County, Maryland – The Sherwood High School community is mourning the tragic loss of Sanaa Vil, a senior and member of the varsity girls’ basketball team, who passed away in a fatal car accident on Wednesday morning, October 2, 2024.

The crash occurred around 8 a.m. near Norwood Road and Nesbitt Farm Lane, where Sanaa and two other 17-year-old students were involved in a collision with a wooden light pole.

Sanaa Vil was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other two teenagers were critically injured and remain hospitalized.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident, though speed and weather conditions have not yet been ruled out.

The Montgomery County community, including classmates, coaches, and teachers, has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Sanaa, who was described as a talented athlete, a member of the Black Student Union, and a bright student with plans to attend college after her graduation in Spring 2025.

“Sanaa had a positive impact on our lives,” Jen Harkleroad wrote on Facebook.

"We are heartbroken."

Carly Wright also shared, “Heartbreaking… sending so much love and comfort."

Funeral arrangements for Sanaa Vil will be announced by the family at a later time.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by Sanaa’s sister, Ruth Vil, to help cover the funeral expenses.
