US Army Pfc. Matthew Perez, Whittier Resident, Dies in Training Accident, Community Gathers to Honor His Service

Whittier, California – The City of Whittier is mourning the tragic loss of US Army Pfc. Matthew Perez, a paratrooper and proud Whittier resident, who passed away earlier this month during a training accident.

Pfc. Perez’s death has deeply impacted the local community, who are now preparing to honor his life and service with a solemn procession on September 26, 2024.

The procession, which will pass through Whittier, is expected to depart from Ontario Airport and travel through key intersections in the city.

It will offer residents an opportunity to pay their respects to a young soldier who dedicated his life to serving his country.

In a heartfelt statement, Whittier’s Mayor Joe Vinatieri expressed his condolences, saying, “We are heartbroken by the loss of one of Whittier’s own, Army Pfc. Matthew Perez, who dedicated his life to serving our country with honor.

His sacrifice is a sobering reminder of the risks undertaken by those who serve in uniform, and we extend our deepest condolences to the Perez family during this difficult time.”

The community is encouraged to gather along the procession route, and American flags will be distributed to those lining the sidewalks to show their support.

Parking for mourners has been made available at designated locations as the procession heads toward its final destination in Long Beach.

Pfc. Matthew Perez’s dedication and sacrifice will remain in the hearts of the Whittier community forever.
