Vernon Leon Davis, Dedicated Assistant Fire Chief, Tragically Killed by Falling Tree During Tropical Storm Helene

Blackshear, Georgia – Vernon Leon Davis, a devoted assistant fire chief and respected community leader, tragically lost his life on September 27, 2024, while serving his community during the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Helene.

Davis, who had been with the Blackshear Fire Department for over thirty years, was struck by a falling tree while working to clear debris and restore safety amid the chaos of the storm.

His death has left the community in shock and mourning for a man who dedicated his life to protecting others.

The incident occurred at the height of the storm, which had made landfall as a powerful Category 4 hurricane.

It caused widespread destruction across the southeastern United States, including Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, with at least 20 confirmed fatalities.

“Vernon was the kind of person who would do anything for anybody,” said the police chief of Blackshear, expressing the sentiment of many who knew him.

The loss of Davis, a beloved figure in the community, has left a deep void.
