Yakov Shapiro, Beloved Jewish Agency Fellow and Teacher, Passes Away in New York City

New York, NY – Yakov Shapiro, a dedicated Jewish Agency Israel Fellow and teacher, tragically passed away on October 1, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and commitment to the Jewish community.

Shapiro, affectionately known as Yasha, served as the Jewish Agency Israel Fellow at Columbia/Barnard Hillel from 2021 to 2024.

After completing his fellowship in June, he chose to remain in New York, where he continued his passion for education by teaching Hebrew at a local school.

The news of his passing has left the community deeply saddened.

Columbia/Barnard Hillel expressed their sorrow, stating, "Yakov’s joy and warmth had a tremendous impact on our community – he greeted each of us with a wide smile, kind eyes, and an exclamation of ‘chayim sheli,’ a favored term of endearment."

Shapiro’s impact extended beyond the classroom, as he also supported global Jewish causes, including assisting refugees during the Russo-Ukrainian War.

A passionate runner, he completed the 2023 New York City Marathon, exemplifying his adventurous spirit and love for life.

Sam LaFata shared on social media, "So sad to hear of Yakov’s passing…he loved his Jewish faith and mother so much."

Janelle Hartman, who volunteered with Yakov, added, "Oh no!!! I am heartbroken."

Shapiro will be remembered for his radiant presence and dedication to the people he served.
